MBBS counselling likely to begin from July 17

Chennai: Counselling for MBBS/BDS sessions is likely to begin on July 17, according to the selection committee of the Directorate of Medical Education. This year, the National Medical Commission has proposed simultaneous online counselling for the first round of All India Quota by the centre’s medical counselling and state quota seats in government and self-financing colleges by the state selection committee.

“The Centre is yet to announce the rules and schedule for the simultaneous counselling, but we have been told to get ready for the process by July 17,” an official at the directorate said. Usually the first round of counselling in state begins after the centre’s committee completes first round for all India quota seats in state colleges, central institutions such as AIIMS and JIPMER and for deemed universities. This year, the counselling process will be held simultaneously to prevent candidates from “blocking seats” and to save time.

Meanwhile, the state has decided to extend the last date for receipt of MBBS / BDS applications for the 2023-2024 session until 5pm on July 12. Earlier, the last date for application was July 7, a notification from the directorate said. The state has so far received 30,912 applications against the 36,912 applications in 2022-23. More applications are expected by July 12, the directorate said

The sale of applications began online on June 28. The prospectus and applications were uploaded to www.tnhealth.tn.gov.in and www.tnmedicalselection.org. While NMC will release the rules, the seat matrix for state-level counselling will come from the state medical university.

The selection committee has asked candidates who wish to apply for admission to MBBS / BDS degree courses 2023-2024 under the “Person with Benchmark Disability” quota, to submit applications on the portal. Earlier, the committee had asked students to submit a certificate of disability already issued by the Regional Medical Board of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Chennai or make submissions without the certificates as the portal was not opened at the hospital.

The portal is open and if candidates have applied without the certificate from the regional medical board, they can submit it now by logging in.“These certificates must be uploaded before the last date failing which their eligibility will not be considered,” officials said.
