‘Illegal rave’ held overnight at historic castle
The rave is believed to have happened at Liverpool Castle in Rivington over Saturday night and into Sunday morning on October 26 to 27.
Members of the Horwich Clean Up Brigade arrived on Sunday morning, many of them having heard noise from the rave late into the night.
Ian Rotherham said: “The guys look like they’ve done a good job of clearing it up.
“I went to bed at about 10.30pm and I could hear it then, I’d have thought it would be too cold and wet for them!
“I think it was about 1am, 1.30am when I eventually went to sleep, and I could still hear it then.”
He said the group had collected several bags of rubbish that appeared to have been left over by revellers.
Horwich Clean Up Bridge member Ray Scholes said his wife had been kept awake into the early hours of Sunday morning by the music.
He cleared up around a bag full of rubbish after arriving at Liverpool Castle and was soon joined by more group members.
It appeared the police may have made some of the ravers clear up after themselves.
People passing by Rivington last night also reported seeing what appeared to be a rave.
One passer-by said there could have been hundreds of people there and “even people in wheelchairs” while other residents could hear noises and see lights further afield in Blackrod.

Liverpool Castle was built in 1912 as a replica of the original that had stood from the early 13th century to the early 18th century.
It was designed to look like the ruins of the original castle, with work being completed in 1925.
The walls were damaged and a spiral staircase inside the replica castle collapsed in the 1980s but the building is still accessible to the public at all times of day.
Like elsewhere in Rivington, it is a popular destination for walkers and weekend visitors for Horwich and Blackrod as well as Chorley and Bolton.
